Gotta, gonna, carbs, and the economy of words

Andrew begins after teaching an English as a second language class, where students worked with shortened forms such as "gotta" and "gonna." Native speakers routinely compress common expressions, which makes spoken English much harder for learners to decode.

The same instinct shows up in vocabulary itself. "Carbohydrates" becomes "carbs," because apparently even "carbos" asks too much of the modern speaker.

Meanwhile, Andrew is trying to get his diet dialed back in with more protein and fewer carbohydrates. The stomach discomfort discussed in recent episodes has improved considerably.

Teaching language through context

Much of the day has been spent teaching language. In ESL, students read, answer questions, write, discuss, and repeatedly return to the same ideas in different forms.

The goal is comprehension rather than memorizing isolated language items. Stories and meaningful context give learners a reason to process difficult words and structures, even when some of the language remains slightly beyond their current level.

Andrew has been especially pleased with the progress of the adult ESL students at Pierce College. They already have substantial English under their belts, which makes it possible to push them hard while keeping the class interactive.

Spanish Chat Club at Tacoma Language Academy

The day's second class is Spanish Chat Club through Tacoma Language Academy. The small-group session gives intermediate speakers an hour of guided conversation in Spanish.

This week's conversation centers on food: travel experiences, restaurants, preparing dishes, meals for special occasions, and the questions someone might ask before inviting guests over.

A $124 red-light camera ticket

A traffic-camera notice from the Puyallup Police Department arrives in the mail. The photographs clearly show the household vehicle turning right on red after slowing substantially but not coming to a complete stop before crossing the line.

The fine is $124. Andrew is not enthusiastic about paying it and argues that automated traffic enforcement can feel as much like a revenue source as a safety program.

At the same time, there is an obvious public-safety reason to keep intersections clear and discourage drivers from ignoring red lights. The larger question is whether automated cameras are the right way to do it, how large the fines should be, and where the money ultimately goes.

Following legends is difficult

The traffic-ticket complaint drifts into a discussion of television and broadcasting personalities. Ken Jennings followed Alex Trebek on Jeopardy!, Ryan Seacrest followed Pat Sajak on Wheel of Fortune, and Mariners broadcasters have had to work in the shadow of Dave Niehaus.

There may be nothing wrong with the replacement. Sometimes the problem is simply that following a beloved broadcaster is an almost impossible job.

One Mariners win changes the mood

After another frustrating stretch, the Mariners manage a 1-0 win on the day this episode is recorded. The offense does the bare minimum, while the pitching staff carries the game.

The roster still appears talented enough to turn the season around. A couple of hitters getting hot, injured players returning, and the pitching staff performing to expectations could change the standings quickly.

Andrew does not expect manager Dan Wilson to be fired during the season. Wilson is a member of the Mariners Hall of Fame and helped guide the team deep into the postseason last year. For now, the hope is that the club finds another run before the season gets away from it.

Washington State Card Show

The Washington State Card Show comes to the Washington State Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 15.

The show is built for collectors, investors, and hobbyists interested in sports cards, Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, other collectible and trading card games, autographs, memorabilia, and related collectibles.

The event runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Pavilion, with early-bird entry beginning at 9:00 AM. General admission is $5, early-bird admission is $10, and children 12 and under are free. Parking is free in the Gold Lot.

Free Zootopia drive-in movie

On Saturday, August 22, the fairgrounds host a free drive-in showing of Zootopia in the Blue Lot.

The lot opens at 7:30 PM and the movie begins around 9:00 PM, shortly after sunset. Admission is first come, first served until the lot reaches capacity.

Guests watch from their vehicles and listen through the car stereo. Fisher Scones and other fair-related activities are scheduled before the movie.

The event rules prohibit weapons, outside alcohol, illegal drugs, drones, laser pointers, skates, rollerblades, and skateboards. Vehicle engines and headlights must be turned off after parking, and only service animals are allowed.

The Washington State Fair is getting close

The Washington State Fair begins September 4, and the upcoming schedule is already filling with concerts, attractions, food, and other events.

Weird Al Yankovic is among the performers coming to Puyallup. More fair coverage will come as opening day gets closer.
