The setup is not especially elaborate, but it works. The process has become another example of learning by doing and gradually improving a project over time.

Ferrucci Junior High and temporary school locations

Puyallup School District has announced that Ferrucci Junior High will not be ready for students at the beginning of the school year. Students will begin the year in the temporary locations established during the spring, including partner sites for seventh and eighth graders, the Emerald Ridge and Glacier View campus for ninth graders, and Stahl Junior High for students in the Supports program.

The district is also continuing water-quality testing in school buildings. When a fixture tests above the state's recommended action level, its use is restricted while remediation and follow-up testing take place.

A proposed $15 million financing measure

The district is considering a limited general obligation bond of up to $15 million to cover temporary cash-flow needs created by the Ferrucci restoration and other voter-approved capital projects. The district says the financing would allow construction work to continue while insurance payments and other revenues are received.

The proposal would not require voter approval or increase property taxes. The bond would mature no later than June 1, 2028, and could support the Ferrucci reconstruction, roof replacements, HVAC work, equipment, professional services, and other authorized capital expenses.

The board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on August 3 before considering a resolution authorizing the borrowing.

What RCW 28A.530.080 allows

The host takes a practical look at RCW 28A.530.080, the state law that gives school districts additional authority to borrow money for school property, facilities, construction, remodeling, structural improvements, energy projects, and related purposes.

Before issuing more than $250,000 in non-voter-approved bonds, a district must publish notice for two consecutive weeks and hold a public hearing. After receiving public comment, the school board may authorize the debt by resolution.

Draft 2026–27 district budget

The district has also released information about its draft budget for the 2026–27 school year. The episode includes the district's budget study session for listeners who want the full presentation.

Building a classroom soap opera

In the summer ESL class, students are creating an ongoing story connected to Washington State. The story begins with John Patterson, a newcomer camping near Mount Rainier, and Jason, a helpful character he meets near the lake. A third character will eventually arrive to create trouble.

The class uses the story to study vocabulary, idioms, grammar, reading, discussion, and literary language. One recurring expression is "out of the woods," which can describe both leaving the forest and escaping a difficult situation.

John carries an old letter written by his great-grandfather, Samuel Patterson. The letter includes half of a map and hints at a hidden treasure. Students are helping determine the characters, secrets, and direction of the story as it develops.

Language, accents, and apropos

The episode wanders through the word "apropos," the idea of a lingua franca, the unpredictability of English, and the host's attempts to practice Australian, Scottish, country, and Spanish-influenced accents. Podcasting provides a place to experiment with language that might otherwise remain unused.

The Goodguys 38th Griot's Garage Pacific Northwest Nationals takes place July 24 through July 26 at the Washington State Fair Event Center in Puyallup. The event features more than 2,500 hot rods, trucks, customs, muscle cars, and classics from 1999 and earlier.

The weekend also includes a cars-for-sale corral, vendors, pinstriping, live music, twilight cruising, vintage drag racing at Pacific Raceways, and an All American Sunday open to American-made or American-powered show cars from any year.
