Episode 79 opens with the host checking in from a hot office as Puyallup starts to feel more like summer. After a rainy stretch and some cooler days, the weather is warming up, school is winding down, and baseball practice is still on the calendar.
Youth baseball is once again a major part of the episode. The host looks back on a weekend tournament in Longview with the PCR All Stars, including the drive down, staying across the river in Oregon, and getting used to coaching third base with a new group of players.
The tournament brought some early learning moments. The host reflects on sending runners, judging player speed, reading jumps, and realizing that tournament play can expose the small details that still need work.
A long rain delay became one of the turning points of the weekend. The Longview team used the break to hit in a nearby indoor batting cage, while the PCR players waited in the dugout. When play resumed, Longview came out swinging and the PCR pitcher had to restart after cooling down for an hour.
The host also talks about the oddities of tournament travel. The hotel pool had been drained, the barbecue was broken, and the kids ended up making their own fun with blitzball, a nearby field, and a covered skate park behind the hotel.
The second day brought another challenge when the bridge to the fields was scheduled to close before the morning game. The team had to leave very early, arrived tired and sluggish, and had to fight through a rough start before finishing the weekend with a strong win.
The final game gave the team a better ending to the trip. The host's son pitched well for three innings, another pitcher came in and did his job, and the team was able to leave Longview with a victory.
The baseball section becomes a reflection on control and growth. Some things, like rain delays and travel problems, cannot be controlled. Other things, like base running, decision making, leadership, and execution, can be cleaned up with practice.
The host talks about the leadership role these All-Star players are growing into. Many of them played behind older 12-year-olds during the regular season, but now they have a chance to become the leaders on their teams next year.
The episode then shifts toward the end of the school year. The host talks about kids being excited for summer break, while also noting that school provides structure, routine, and something meaningful to do during the day.
Summer will also bring a teaching change for the host. He will be teaching ESL and Washington state history, which gives him a chance to work in a new subject area and explore language, culture, history, and classroom conversation in a different way.
American idioms become part of that teaching discussion. The host mentions phrases like "look before you leap," "loose cannon," "lost at sea," "you lucky dog," "on a shoestring budget," "raining cats and dogs," and "between a rock and a hard place."
The idiom conversation also connects back to language learning more broadly. The host compares "between a rock and a hard place" to the Spanish expression "entre la espada y la pared," meaning between the sword and the wall.
The host gives an update on Tacoma Language Academy, his side project for adult language learners. He mentions Spanish classes for beginners, the Spanish Story Lab, Spanish Chat Club, private lessons, and live Zoom-based learning options.
Tacoma Language Academy is presented as a place for adults who want to study Spanish for personal enrichment rather than college credit. The host talks about working with students from different places and hoping more admitted students find the right time to begin classes.
Podyallup's value-for-value model also gets a reminder. Listeners are encouraged to send in local stories, events, updates, and things happening around Puyallup that could be useful for future episodes.
The episode highlights two upcoming events at the Washington State Fair grounds. Washington Summer Con is coming June 19 through June 21, with a large guest list that includes actors, voice performers, wrestlers, and pop-culture figures from movies, television, animation, and games.
The host scrolls through the Summer Con guest list and mentions names and franchises that stand out, including Steve Burns from Blue's Clues, Patrick Warburton, Henry Winkler, Wayne Knight, Kevin Smith, George Takei, Jurassic Park actors, Coco, Encanto, and more.
Gem Faire is also coming to the fairgrounds June 19 through June 21. The host points out that it is much cheaper to attend than Summer Con and frames it as an option for people who want to look at gems, jewelry, minerals, and other shiny things without spending as much money.
The episode closes quickly as the host has to get to baseball practice. He reminds listeners that new episodes of Podyallup come out every Friday.
