Episode 77 opens with a local check-in from Puyallup and South Hill. The host reflects on life in town, the awkward search for the right word for a person from Puyallup, and the continuing adventure of trying to speak clearly into a microphone.
The episode begins with a shout out to a local fifth and sixth grade band concert. The host talks about watching his son play trumpet, hearing classic beginner band songs, and appreciating the work of the band teacher, Mr. Picard.
That band-concert story turns into a short Star Trek detour. The host remembers seeing Star Trek: First Contact with his dad as a kid, expecting not to like it, and realizing that it was actually a strong movie. Patrick Stewart, Captain Picard, the Borg, and childhood sci-fi memories all make their way into the conversation.
Youth baseball is the main focus of the episode. The PCR Giants won a tense tournament game 3 to 2 against a team they had not beaten all season. The game went six innings and came down to pitching, defense, base running, and one clutch hit late in the game.
The host walks through the key moments from the win, including two early runs in the first inning, a sacrifice fly, a strong defensive catch in left field, and several clean plays around the infield. The game stayed close throughout, with the other team tying it in the bottom of the fifth.
The pitching performance gets special attention. The Giants' starter threw five innings of one-run baseball with no walks and stayed under 60 pitches, keeping him eligible to pitch again on Saturday. The reliever also threw strikes, and the team finished the game with zero walks allowed.
The winning run came in the top of the sixth. After one runner was thrown out stealing, another runner got on, stole second, advanced on an overthrow, and scored when the leadoff hitter drove the ball into right center field. The Giants held on in the bottom half to win 3 to 2.
The episode also reflects on coaching. The host talks about managing pitch counts, putting players in positions where they can succeed, making sure everyone gets playing time, and balancing development with the pressure of tournament baseball.
Community volunteering is a major theme. The host argues that youth sports and similar local organizations depend on people giving their time. He connects coaching baseball to teaching, building up young people, and trying to leave the community better than he found it.
Local arts events are previewed from the Puyallup School District calendar. Upcoming concerts include band, orchestra, choir, talent shows, elementary music programs, and the Emerald Ridge High School chamber choir showcase on Friday, June 5.
The chamber choir preview leads into a personal reflection on the host's own high school chamber singers experience in Walla Walla. He remembers the closeness of the group, singing the national anthem at a Mariners game, singing at a funeral, and writing thank-you letters to teachers who shaped his life.
The value-for-value model is revisited. Podyallup is presented as a local show built around community value, local stories, and listener support. Listeners can support the show financially, send local events, suggest guests, or email story ideas to Andrew.
The episode includes a lighter Costco story about kids wanting junk food, saying "it's good," and the dangerous temptation of buying too much peanut butter. The host uses the story as a brief comic break before returning to local events and sports.
Local high school sports are also covered. Sumner baseball advanced in the state tournament and was scheduled to face Kamiakin on Friday, May 29. Puyallup baseball fell to Gonzaga Prep, while Sumner softball also reached the semifinals.
Pierce College events are previewed, including Food and Fadwa at the Black Box Theatre from June 4 through June 7, a chamber orchestra concert on June 12, a concert choir performance on June 13, and a wind ensemble concert on June 16.
Washington State Fairgrounds events are also mentioned. The Stamp and Scrapbook Expo takes place May 29 and 30, with vendors, workshops, and paper-crafting activities. Thriftapalooza is scheduled for June 6 and 7 at the Washington State Fair and Event Center.
Podyallup remains a value-for-value podcast centered on local life in Puyallup. Listeners are encouraged to support the show, send local stories, contribute events, suggest guests, or donate at podyallup.com/donate. New episodes release every Friday.
